Taiwan at Bazaar Berlin: the “beautiful island” displays outstanding handicrafts
• Numerous presentations and workshops at the Taiwan Pavilion
• Bazaar Berlin takes place from 18 to 22 November 2015
Berlin, 30 October 2015 – “Ilha Formosa“, or “the beautiful island“, was the name that Portuguese seafarers gave to the place they landed on in the West Pacific at the end of the sixteenth century. Today the island, which is the size of Baden-Württemberg, is called Taiwan, and is still beautiful in many ways. Its outstanding handicrafts are just one example and visitors keen on discovering Taiwan’s cultural treasures should on no account miss Bazaar Berlin 2015.
From 18 to 22 November Taiwan will be displaying much more than just handicraft products. In Hall 17 on Stand 127 visitors will be able to gain a glimpse of craftsmen and handicraft makers at work and can even try out their own skills. Workshops will be available on all five days of the fair.
At the Taiwan Pavilion attractions will include the fascinating porcelain artwork of Lung-Chieh LIN, Sung-Pen LIN, Wu LIU and Siang-Syuan ZENG. For example, Yu-An YI, a young female artist, has acquired a reputation for her unique style of painting. Visitors will be able to marvel at Shu-Ping HUANG’s outstanding metalwork objects. Erh-Jung TSAI, who works with bamboo paper, and Yuk-Heung CHAN, who produces handmade textile bags, will provide more examples of the diverse art on display at the Taiwan Pavilion.
The government of Taiwan was quick to recognise the huge potential of handicraft production. Thus, in 1935 the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI) was set up to develop the cultural and creative industries. This organisation supports craftsmen from all over Taiwan at national and international level.
Having already attended the International Innovative Craft Fair 2015 in Thailand and interiorlifestyle Tokyo, the NTCRI is now organising the Taiwan Pavilion at Bazaar Berlin 2015. After the fair the NTCRI’s representatives and craftsmen will be exploring Germany’s art and cultural attractions, holding talks with buyers and establishing new contacts.
