Bazaar Berlin: Christmas gifts for globetrotters
A trip around Nepal, Peru, Tunisia, Ghana and Italy in only five days? The only place to do that is Bazaar Berlin, the international consumer exhibition for handicrafts, designer articles, natural goods and fair trade products. From 3 to 7 November the fair is opening its doors again on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, and 220 exhibitors and goods manufacturers from 35 countries are inviting visitors to shop in the exotic atmosphere of a bazaar.
“We are delighted to finally be back again“, said Esther Piehl, the project manager for Bazaar Berlin. “Bazaar Berlin combines everything that belongs under one roof: ideas for sustainable products, creativity at international level, traditional handicrafts, as well as a passion and enthusiasm for unique and special things. Even if due to international travel restrictions still in force this year’s Bazaar Berlin is not back to its full size, we are delighted that exhibitors and manufacturers from 35 countries are here with us in Berlin. We are particularly honoured by the trust and loyalty shown by our long-standing partners and exhibitors, including from Asia, South America and Africa, who under all circumstances wanted to be here again.“
For more than 40 years Superior Arts & Handicrafts from Nepal has been exhibiting high-quality handicrafts from Nepal and Tibet at Bazaar Berlin. For over 30 years Artesanías Típicas Ecuador from Ecuador , Culturas Andinas Tiahuanacuand Wasi Punku from Bolivia have delighted markets around the world with their traditional handmade articles from South America. And for more than 20 years Geolicrafts Ventures from Ghana – an established exhibitor and partner – has been displaying genuine African handicrafts and performing rhythmic drumming in the halls on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds.
Fair & Social – fair trade brings people together
The market for fair trade products has been growing for years, with people increasingly wanting to know where an article originates and how it is manufactured and traded. The Fair Trade Market, an established part of Bazaar Berlin since 2014, takes this into account. At this year’s event, under the heading Fair & Social, the fair trade section also includes socially oriented workshops and manufacturing businesses as well as non-profit companies and organisations. The many items there range from fair trade fashion from Cambodia, a German-Ghanaian revolution in the world of chocolate, fair trade silver jewellery from Mexico, to bags and rucksacks from waste cement bags, manufactured as part of a social project in Kenya. Greenpeace, Aktionsbündnis Fairer Handel, as well as the ”Fair Rallye!“ of Engagement Global all have information on fair trade and social activities.
Focus on social responsibility
Throughout almost 60 years of Bazaar Berlin, good business has always gone hand in hand with social responsibility, an issue of great importance. This is reflected in the exhibitors’ outstanding commitment and their special products from all over the world.
Taking part for the first time this year at Bazaar Berlin is the Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children from Gaza. It was established in 1998 to provide jobs for deaf people and assist their livelihoods. Nowadays, the workshops produce quality handicrafts from the Palestinian Territories, hand-painted wooden items and ceramic wares as well as embroidery on clothing and textiles. The products are hand-manufactured by qualified craftsmen and women with a hearing disability at the workshops of Atfaluna Crafts.
In support of the initiative Defend Afghan Women`s Rights, the team of Chapati Design of Berlin has come up with something different: with its #Chapati_Humanity Hoodie design it aims to collect donations and raise awareness for the situation of women in Afghanistan. The GOTS-certified organic cotton hoodie is on display at Bazaar Berlin. All sales proceeds will go to the Defend Afghan Women`s Rights campaign.
Fair Fashion catwalk
On Friday, 5 and Saturday 6 November, Hall 19 will be transformed into a catwalk, where at 2 and 5 p.m. on both days the Fair Fashion show will exhibit fashion items produced and traded under 100 per cent fair conditions. Taking part in the show are outstanding collections created over the last two years by the Modern Ethnic Design Center (MEDC) in Cambodia, as well as fair trade textiles from Weltladen A Janela and collections by Chapati Design. The fashion show is sponsored by the Regional Office for Joint Development Ventures of the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises.
International shopping mall and marketplace of cultures
For those in search of elegant trinkets for themselves or original gifts for their loved ones, Bazaar Berlin is the place to go. A glance at the halls confirms there is something for everyone at this event. Visitors can discover, look around, marvel and naturally buy products in five themed sections, as if they were at a real bazaar. Sections include the World Market (Halls 18 and 20) with unique items and typical locally made handicrafts from around the world, Art + Style (Palais am Funkturm) featuring unusual fashion items with a personal touch, jewellery and accessoires, as well as Natural Living (Hall 20) with a wide variety of health products. The focus of the Fair & Social theme section (Palais am Funkturm) is on fair trade goods. If visitors follow the beat of drums they will find themselves in the Living Africa hall (Hall 20), and in the Winter at Home section (Hall 20) they can enjoy a pre-Christmas atmosphere.
The safest Bazaar Berlin – by a distance
This year’s Bazaar Berlin is being held under “3G“ rules. It means that those attending must be either vaccinated, have recovered from Covid or supply an up-to-date negative test result. Documentation will be checked at the entrance. In addition, masks must be worn in the display halls on the exhibition grounds – as is the case in department stores and boutiques – and the usual minimum distancing rules must be observed. Food and beverages may only be consumed in the seating areas at the Palais am Funkturm. All safety and hygiene measures required for Bazaar Berlin are regularly coordinated with the relevant public authorities and updated accordingly.
Details of the comprehensive safety and hygiene concept established by Messe Berlin in accordance with the Berlin authorities’ latest SARS-CoV-2 Infection Control Directive and in coordination with the relevant public health authority can be found online at www.bazaar-berlin.de/de/die-messe/news-wichtige-hinweise/.
By far the safest Bazaar Berlin
The safety and health of all exhibitors, partners and visitors have the utmost priority. In accordance with the Berlin authorities’ latest SARS-CoV-2 Infection Control Directive and in coordination with the relevant public health authority, Messe Berlin has established a comprehensive safety and hygiene concept. This concept, which will be implemented at Bazaar Berlin, is based on the following principles: hygiene, distancing, ventilation and contact tracing. Specifically, this means that tickets to Bazaar Berlin 2021 are non-transferable. In order to attend, visitors must comply with the so-called “3G” rule and supply proof that they have been vaccinated, or have recovered or have tested negative within the 24 hours prior to their visit. Detailed information on the safety and hygiene concept as well as admission requirements can be found online here.

About BAZAAR BERLIN
From 3 to 7 November 2021, Bazaar Berlin is being held for the 59th time on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. This year, due to the pandemic, Bazaar Berlin is taking place on a slightly smaller scale. In 2019, at the five themed sections under the headings World Market, Fair & Social, Natural Living, Art & Style and Winter at Home, around 500 exhibitors from more than 60 countries presented quality handicrafts, typical regional specialities, fashion with a personal touch, jewellery, accessoires, eco-products, fair trade goods, natural goods and many other items.
For Bazaar Berlin, combining good business with social responsibility is an important aspect. Since it was launched in 1962 as ‘Partners for Progress’ in support of development policy aims, it regularly promotes programmes supporting fair trade goods that are produced sustainably and under ethically fair conditions.
